What Is Scraping Therapy?

Scraping therapy uses smooth, specially designed metal or ceramic tools to apply targeted pressure along muscles, tendons, and connective tissue. The tools help break up adhesions and scar tissue in the fascia — the web of connective tissue that surrounds your muscles — which can restrict movement and cause pain when it becomes tight or thickened.

You'll typically feel some mild discomfort during the treatment, which is normal and expected. Temporary redness or minor bruising on the treated area is also common and resolves quickly. Most patients leave feeling noticeably looser and more mobile.

IASTM is closely related to Gua Sha, a traditional Chinese medicine technique that uses similar scraping motions. At Move Forward Chiropractic, we use the clinical IASTM approach, though patients familiar with Gua Sha will recognize the fundamentals.

Who Is Scraping Therapy For?

One of the things that makes IASTM so useful is how broadly it applies. Dr. Vega and Dr. Barrera use it on the vast majority of patients who walk through the door — it's not limited to a specific condition or body part. Any muscle group can be treated.

We typically continue IASTM as long as it's producing results. If there's no improvement after two sessions, or if a patient's symptoms worsen, we'll reassess and swap to a different technique. Our goal is always finding what actually works for your body.

Scraping therapy commonly helps with:

  • Muscle tightness and restricted range of motion
  • Trigger points and stubborn knots
  • Neck pain and upper back tension
  • Low back pain
  • Shoulder injuries and rotator cuff tightness
  • Knee and ankle pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Sports injuries and overuse injuries
  • Headaches related to muscle tension
  • TMJ dysfunction

IASTM is frequently combined with other treatments at our clinic, including chiropractic adjustments, dry needling, cupping therapy, and myofascial release, depending on what your body needs that day.

What to Expect During a Session

IASTM is typically one component of your visit rather than a standalone treatment. Here's what a session looks like:

Assessment first. Before any scraping begins, your chiropractor evaluates the area — checking range of motion, palpating the tissue, and identifying where adhesions or restrictions are most pronounced.

Tool application. The chiropractor uses a stainless steel or specialized tool to glide along the skin over the targeted tissue. You'll feel pressure and sometimes a mild scraping sensation — uncomfortable at times, but manageable.

Follow-up movement. We'll usually have you perform some active movement after treatment to reinforce the tissue release and help your nervous system integrate the change.

Sessions involving IASTM typically run within your regular appointment window. There's no downtime required afterward.

Why Choose Move Forward Chiropractic for Scraping Therapy?

RockTape Certified. Dr. Michael Vega and Dr. Tatiana Barrera both hold RockTape IASTM certifications (2020). RockTape is a recognized provider of functional movement and soft tissue certification for healthcare professionals. [Certifications to be added once received from Michael.]

Part of a complete treatment plan. We don't use IASTM in isolation. It's one tool in a broader approach that draws from chiropractic rehabilitation, functional movement training, and other manual therapies. You get a personalized plan, not a one-size protocol.

Three Tampa locations. We serve patients across Tampa from our main location in Carrollwood and two satellite locations at CrossFit Sabal Park and CrossFit Big Guava.

Patients who've experienced results. IASTM consistently helps patients move more freely, reduce chronic tightness, and recover faster from injuries. We've applied this technique across hundreds of visits spanning a wide range of conditions and fitness levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's usually some discomfort during treatment — a sensation similar to deep pressure or mild burning along the treated area. This is normal and expected. Temporary redness or mild bruising afterward is also common and typically fades within a day or two. Most patients find the short-term discomfort well worth the results.

It varies. We assess after each session. If IASTM is working, we continue. If there's no improvement after two sessions, we adjust the approach. Many patients notice a difference after just one or two treatments.

They share the same foundational concept — using a tool to scrape along tissue — but Gua Sha is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and is often used for facial, cosmetic, and broader systemic wellness purposes. IASTM is the clinical, evidence-informed version used in rehabilitation and chiropractic settings. We use the IASTM approach in practice.

IASTM is used across a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions: muscle tightness, trigger points, low back pain, neck pain, shoulder injuries, sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more. It can also support recovery from automobile injuries. Because it works on soft tissue generally, it's relevant to almost any condition involving restricted or dysfunctional muscle.

No referral is needed. You can book directly online at any of our three Tampa locations.
