You're Not Looking for a Quick Crack. You're Looking for a Plan.
If you've tried a chiropractor before and left feeling like nothing really changed, you're not alone. A lot of Tampa chiropractic offices treat every patient the same way: same adjustment, same five minutes, next patient. That works fine for occasional stiffness. It doesn't work if you're a CrossFitter dealing with a nagging shoulder, a weekend warrior who tweaked something at Dragon Boat practice, or someone whose pain keeps coming back no matter how many times they get adjusted.
At Move Forward, adjustments are the starting point, not the whole plan. Dr. Barrera and Dr. Vega build each visit around what's actually causing your pain, then combine chiropractic techniques with the right complementary care so relief actually holds.
What Chiropractic Adjustment Actually Does
Chiropractic manipulative therapy (CMT) is high-velocity, low-amplitude manipulation of the joint. It releases gas from the joint and triggers a rush of hormones like endorphins and dopamine that help reduce pain in the area. In plain terms: it's a fast, targeted adjustment that can immediately decrease pain, increase range of motion, reduce local inflammation, and decrease muscle tension.
Dr. Barrera and Dr. Vega use several CMT techniques depending on what your body needs:
- Diversified — the classic, broadly applicable adjustment
- Gonstead — a precise, joint-specific technique
- Thompson Drops — a table-assisted, lower-force adjustment
Not every patient wants or needs a high-force adjustment. That's where the Activator Method comes in. Originally developed for pregnant patients, infants, children, and older adults, the Activator is a low-force, instrument-assisted technique that's gentle enough for sensitive patients but versatile enough for extremity work and trigger point therapy too. It can help with trigger points, muscle tension, rib pain, and TMJ, sinus, or facial tension.
For pain outside the spine, like a stiff shoulder, a cranky knee, or wrist pain from too many pull-ups, extremity adjustments target the joint dysfunction directly. This is especially common with sports injuries, overuse, and overtraining, the kind of thing Move Forward sees constantly from Tampa's CrossFit community. Extremity work can help with frozen shoulder, TMJ disorder, knee and ankle pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome, using extra-spinal adjustments, Thompson Drops, and Activator protocols.
Who's Actually Adjusting You
Dr. Tatiana Barrera, DC is a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), certified in dry needling and RockTape IASTM. She's the primary chiropractor at Move Forward's main Carrollwood office and its CrossFit satellite locations, and she's a competitive Dragon Boat paddler and CrossFitter herself at CrossFit Big Guava.
Dr. Michael Vega, DC co-owns the practice, holds a Master's in Functional Medicine/Nutrition and an MBA, teaches at the university level, and is certified in both acupuncture and dry needling.
Between them, Dr. Barrera and Dr. Vega bring athletic training, functional medicine, and hands-on rehab experience to every adjustment, not just a generic spinal crack.
Conditions We Treat
Chiropractic adjustment isn't a one-size-fits-all fix. Here's what CMT, Activator, and extremity work at Move Forward commonly help with:
- TMJ, Sinus & Facial Tension — Activator protocols can ease jaw tension and facial tightness without the force of a traditional adjustment.
- Shoulder Pain & Frozen Shoulder — Extremity adjustments target the joint directly, not just the surrounding spine.
- Shoulder, Elbow & Hand Pain — Common in CrossFitters dealing with overuse from pull-ups, cleans, and overhead work, including carpal tunnel symptoms.
- Sciatica — Adjustment can relieve pressure and improve mobility alongside our dedicated flexion-distraction therapy.
- Vertigo & Dizziness — Often connected to upper cervical alignment; see our upper cervical chiropractic page for a deeper look.
- CrossFit-Related Injuries — Overuse and overtraining injuries are what Dr. Barrera and Dr. Vega see most, given their own ties to Tampa's CrossFit community.
- Auto Accident & Personal Injury — CMT is frequently used to relieve pain and restore range of motion following an accident.
Not sure which condition fits what you're dealing with? Book an appointment and Dr. Barrera or Dr. Vega will walk you through it during your first visit.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
- A real conversation first. Before any hands-on work, you'll walk through your history and what movements or activities are actually causing your pain.
- A hands-on assessment. Movement testing and orthopedic exams narrow down exactly what's going on, so the adjustment plan fits your injury instead of a generic protocol.
- Adjustment, then a plan forward. You'll get the CMT, Activator, or extremity technique that fits your case, paired with next steps so the relief actually sticks.
Why Patients Stick With It
- Faster relief from pain and stiffness, without guessing which technique you need
- Adjustments matched to your activity level, whether that's CrossFit, Dragon Boat, or just getting through the workday
- A gentler option (Activator) for patients who don't want or can't tolerate high-force adjustments
- Extremity-specific care for joint pain outside the spine, not just spinal adjustments
- Two doctors who train the way their patients do, not just doctors who treat them
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The sound you hear is gas releasing from the joint, not bones grinding or breaking. At Move Forward, adjustment is one part of a broader plan that includes technique selection (CMT, Activator, or extremity work) based on what your body actually needs.
